Lack of Leadership Spoils The Interview

by William Ray
(Washington, DC)

Recently I decided to explore and career move and interviewed with a well know technology company that is a respected leader in their field. Going into the interview I felt that their recruiter had provided good technical insight into position. However, after meeting with the three members of the interview team I left totally disappointed. Technically they were all extremely competent, however they had no clear vision for the real work. They spoke about what a great place it was to work, benefits and time off – but any strategic vision was missing.

I forged through the process with hopes that the manager would be able to provide the information I was seeing. When I met the manager I discovered why the team lacked a vision for the future – as the manager didn’t have one either. The manager talked a lot but never really made the future on his team sound that exciting.

For the time being I have decided to stay put even though the company made me a great offer and the commute would have been less. I am a goal driven person that wants to work for a manager with same work ethic. Many times I’ve been told that managers hire employees in their own image – perhaps I want to hire a boss in my own image.
